2026 has been a good-news year for most of the continental U.S.

NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment is the industry's most authoritative forecast. It found that every assessment area in the Lower 48 can meet normal summer demand.

Over 58 GW of new solar, battery, and gas capacity got added since last summer.

Only three regions carry elevated risk this year: New England, the Pacific Northwest, and Saskatchewan, plus one localized concern in far-west Texas. That's down from six flagged regions in 2025.

That's good news for the mainland. It doesn't apply to Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, or Alaska.

A mainland outage, even a bad one, usually means a utility can reroute power through a regional transmission network while it fixes the problem.

Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, the USVI, Hawaii, and Alaska don't have that option. Each one runs largely as its own isolated system.

When something fails, there's no neighboring grid to lean on. Everything runs on local generation and local reserves. If either falls short, outages follow.

Add real hurricane or typhoon exposure for most of these islands on top of that. The baseline risk level ends up structurally higher than almost anywhere on the mainland, no matter what a given year's weather does.

The real problem is different. If your unit ever needs warranty service, most manufacturers have no way to pick it up from an island and ship it back for replacement. Lithium batteries are dangerous-goods freight. Most carriers won't touch that route at all.

So people get warranty approval, then get stuck. The manufacturer says yes, but there's no way to actually get the unit back and forth.
