Why does my water taste or smell different here than where I used to live?

Most homes in The Villages are on municipal (city) water sourced from the Floridan Aquifer.

Like most of Central Florida's groundwater, it carries a naturally high mineral content, mainly calcium and magnesium, also known as "hardness."

That's what causes the faint mineral taste some residents notice, along with spotting on dishes, dry skin after showers, and scale buildup around faucets and water heaters over time.

It's not dangerous, but it is noticeable, especially if you moved here from an area with softer municipal water.

Is my city water safe to drink?

Yes, municipal water in The Villages is treated and meets federal safety standards.

That said, "meets the minimum standard" and "tastes and feels great" are two different things.

Chlorine used for disinfection can leave a taste and odor, and hardness affects both comfort and your plumbing and appliances over the long run.

This is why so many residents choose to filter or treat their water at the point it enters the home, even though it's technically compliant.

I live outside the core Villages area (Leesburg, Wildwood, and similar) and I'm on a private well instead of city water, does that change anything?

It does, and it's worth calling out directly since not everyone in this area is on municipal service.

Well water in Central Florida is more likely to carry sediment, iron, and sometimes a sulfur ("rotten egg") odor, along with bacteria that municipal treatment would otherwise handle before it ever reaches your tap.

If you're on a well, a UV disinfection stage isn't just a nice-to-have, it's the piece that addresses what your water source can't filter out on its own.

Everything below applies whether you're on city water or a well; where it matters, we've called out the difference.

What does this system actually do, in plain terms?

It's three jobs in one, installed where the water line enters your home:

• The Rhino filter tank reduces chlorine, taste, and odor issues across every tap in the house, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, outdoor spigots, all of it.
• The salt-free conditioner addresses hardness by changing the mineral structure so it doesn't stick to pipes, water heaters, and fixtures, without adding sodium to your water.
• The UV stage uses ultraviolet light to neutralize bacteria and viruses as water passes through, which matters most if you're on well water or simply want that extra layer of peace of mind.

Why salt-free instead of a traditional salt-based softener?

Two reasons come up constantly with our Villages customers.

First, if you or a family member is watching sodium intake for health reasons, a salt-based softener adds sodium to your water, a salt-free conditioner doesn't.

Second, salt-based systems need bags of salt hauled in and refilled regularly, which is exactly the kind of maintenance most people are trying to get away from with a home upgrade.

Salt-free conditioning addresses the scale problem without either drawback.

Will this actually stop the scale buildup on my shower doors and fixtures?

A salt-free conditioner changes hardness minerals into a form that's far less likely to cling to surfaces, which meaningfully reduces new scale buildup going forward.

It won't strip away years of existing buildup on its own, for that, an initial cleaning of fixtures helps the system's benefit show up faster.

Does the UV stage mean I don't need to worry about my water at all?

UV disinfection is highly effective against bacteria and viruses passing through the unit, but it's one part of a full system, not a substitute for a properly maintained water source.

If you're on a well, we'd still recommend periodic well water testing, UV handles ongoing disinfection, not one-time contamination issues in the source itself.

Is installation a big project?

It's installed at your main water line, typically by a licensed plumber or our install partner, in a matter of hours, not days.

It's not something we'd recommend as a weekend DIY project given it ties into your home's main supply line, but it's also far less invasive than most people expect.

Will it affect my water pressure?

No. The system is sized to maintain your home's normal flow rate.

If anything, removing sediment and buildup over time tends to help pressure stay consistent at your fixtures.

How much maintenance does it need?

This is where the system earns its keep for a lot of retirees: there's no salt to haul and load, no resin beads to replace.

The only ongoing task is swapping the pre-filter, post-filter, and UV lamp on their own schedules (see below), and if you're enrolled in the manufacturer's auto-ship replacement program, those arrive on your doorstep automatically.

What's the filter replacement schedule?

• Pre-filter: every 2 months
• Post-filter: every 6 months

Is it loud? Will I notice it running?

No moving parts create noise the way a traditional softener's regeneration cycle does.

How is this different from the whole house system?

The Rhino system treats water for your entire home.

The Waterdrop RO system is installed under your kitchen sink and is specifically for drinking and cooking water, it uses a much finer filtration membrane to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), along with things like fluoride, lead, and other dissolved contaminants that a whole-house carbon filter isn't designed to address at that level.

Many of our customers run both: whole-house for comfort and plumbing protection, RO for what actually goes into their drinking glass and coffee pot.

What does "reverse osmosis" mean, without the science lecture?

Water is pushed through an extremely fine membrane that blocks dissolved particles far smaller than a standard filter can catch, that's what allows it to meaningfully reduce TDS and produce noticeably cleaner-tasting water than filtration alone.

Why does it also have a UV stage if it's already filtering that finely?

The RO membrane addresses dissolved solids and many contaminants, but the UV stage adds a disinfection step for bacteria and viruses right before the water leaves the faucet, an added layer some customers specifically want for extra confidence, particularly on well water.

Do I lose the "healthy minerals" in RO water?

Reverse osmosis does reduce mineral content along with the dissolved solids, that's part of how it works.

If that matters to you, ask us about remineralization filter add-ons, which reintroduce a small amount of mineral content after the RO stage for taste.

How fast does it deliver water, is there a wait?

These are tankless systems, so you're not waiting on a storage tank to refill.

Where does it install, and will it take up cabinet space?

How do I know when to change the filters?

The system has a built-in display that tracks filter life and lets you know when it's time — no guessing, no calendar reminders needed.

Is the water safe for people with health conditions or on medication?

We're not able to give medical guidance, that's a conversation for your doctor, especially if you're managing a specific health condition tied to your diet or water intake.
